Who is interested in this? [Introductions Thread]

Postby terpstra » Sat Aug 12, 2006 2:54 pm

I certainly am.

When this forum appeared, I wondered if there is already some group of people who are working towards founding a Canadian Pirate Party. However, there have been no posts. If there is already a group, how can I help? If not, should we start one?

PS: I currently live in Germany and am following the progress of the German derivative. However, I hope to be home (west coast) well before the next election.

I'm interested as well. I've been searching around and can't really dig up any information on a Canadian Pirate Party, though.

I'm not sure how much interest there is however, since this forum doesn't look used...

I am new to PP and still learning about it but sure it sounds interesting in these days when Big Brother is a pale portrait of what government has turned into!

PP needs to be more active in Canada.

So let's get crackin'

Postby Phyz » Tue Aug 15, 2006 4:09 pm

I too am surprised not to have seen more of this kind of thing in Canada. It's got to start somewhere though.

I know absolutely nothing about forming a political party but I would assume that number one priority would to create a place for interested people to meet (ie an independent website/forum) followed by publicity and registering with Elections Canada.

So in my view the very first priority should be to find someone who is at least moderatly talented at webdesign and some hosting space. Seeing a pirateparty.ca would be a good goal.

I'm glad you guys all posted responses! I was getting worried about Canadian laissez faire.

As first steps might I suggest we get a website up and running with a forum, mailing list, and wiki? Then we can start amassing relevant information there. I hate to admit it, but because the american legal system gets so much more news than the canadian one, I need to find out more about the system in Canada. Then too, we need to know how the law/system works for political parties in Canada. A wiki+forum sounds like a natural place for us to start gathering relevant information.

Please let us know what he says! This is the obvious domain name where we would want to get started. If no one else has better resources, I have access to a colo server where I could host things.

He (Kurt) is intending for pirateparty.ca to be a gathering place for a potential Canadian Pirate Party. He mentioned that he'd soon be throwing up a wordpress blog.

I agree with having a wiki+forum in addition to the blog. Sounds like a good start to me.

Also I suppose set up some orginization. Much as I love anarchism it tends to breakdown over a hundred or so people.

We're actually kind of lucky on that front here. We have no DMCA equivelent and more importantly it is completely legal (a court case involving the Canadian version of the RIAA confirmed it) to share your stuff (I.E. upload). Has to do with the tariff we pay on anything that could hold music. Course the copyright lobby is trying hard to get that 'fixed'. People are aware at least a bit, it's been cited as part of the reason that, that Heritage Minister lost her seat last election.

Definitely count me in. I've been actively pushing for copyright reform for a while now online and would love to be involved in a Canadian Pirate Party.

Elections Canada info

Postby Rafe » Wed Sep 20, 2006 5:32 pm

Hey, all. Here's the relevant Elections Canada document:
Registration of Federal Political Parties — what, how, and why.

Registering a party confers benefits relating mostly to campaign finances. There are other benefits important in our later elections, depending on how we do in our first. There is just one other that is important in the first: the party name goes on the ballot.

I would like to point out that we can organize and campaign without registering. For example, if I were a candidate, my signs could give my affiliation:

Pirate Party
Rafe Saltman
Cariboo—Prince George

It just wouldn't appear by my name on the ballot.

Mark that well, fellows. It means any of us are free to run for Parliament, claiming Pirate affiliation (and using whatever logo we like) in all our campaign materials, even if the Pirate Party of Canada does not yet exist!
