'Television Without Frontiers' regulating internet video

Postby Rave » Wed Oct 18, 2006 8:25 am

I'm sure some of you will have already seen this, but basically the EU has drafted a set of rules that, if passed, would require video bloggers and sites like YouTube and MySpace to be licensed and adhere to special broadcasting regulations. This will be terrible! I'm glad that the UK government is against the idea, and their compromise sounds sensible (to me anyway). The UK needs other member states to support its idea.

I think we should jump on this as soon as we can as an international Pirate issue. Perhaps those of us in parties of countries in the EU can organise a Europe-wide simlutaneous rally or something. Actually I think every party that can help should, as we need to work on issues like this together. If this gets passed before you know it the US could introduce this too.

Great idea about broadcasting it. I've had an idea - how about we set up a website called 'Television Without Boundaries' or something that plays on the name of the directive, where we can organise rallies and then on the day stream video/webcam pics from the rallies as they take place?

We had a meeting with some the members from PPUK to talk about this last night, and doing it the weekend before the 'key meeting' on the 13th November is the same weekend as remembrance day parades etc. So not a great time.

Besides, 3 weeks really isn't enough to organise and get enough people together for a rally like this - we don't want just 5 people to show up. They aren't actually going to decide on the directive on the 13th anyway, so I think we have to do it after, like the end of November.
