IRC chat rooms for any Pirate Party

Postby nbx909 » Sun Sep 17, 2006 6:46 pm

Echel0n Networks (http://echel0n.net and irc.echel0n.net) (the host for the Pirate Party of the United States' chat) is willing to host any Pirate Party's IRC chat for completely free on their geographically distrubuted network hosted with various hosting companies. All servers have the ability to be connected to securely via SSL and one of the servers can accept connections via IPv6. The multiple servers
in our network virtually eliminate the chance of the network becoming unreachable by users. The staff is friendly and willing to help set up and moderate (moderation by the staff of Echel0n networks will happen only if asked and only if the chat room is english speaking) the chat room. For more information contact me (nbx909) in the US Pirate Party chat or any Echel0n networks staff member in #help. Once again they will do this for no charge nor compensation of any kind.

Having official IRC-channels for each country and an international channel on the same server sounds great to me! It would really help collaboration between countries. Please contact PP International and ask if they want to announce it...

Yeah that sounds nice, the good thing about PP-International is that we are the PP-International. I belive the "Just do it" policy needs to apply for all starting Pirate party organisation.

Anyone think we should set up official IRC channels for our parties on echel0n? Like pp.se, pp.fr, pp.be and so on. Proabably a good idea to have pp.int and pp.eu as well. The only problem I see is that with the channels functioning independently there wouldn't be much interaction between us and conversation would be flawed but that might be self adjusting with the pp.int and pp.eu channels.

That is if you find something nice to contribute with, just do it! Don't wait from higher instances for permission. It is better that something is done rather then nothing is being done. This has driven our campaign and the results are that 10% of the members in piratpartiet in active and 25% of our voter base is members in our party. Any other party would dream of these high numbers.

Let's just have the international room at first. That way we'll all be in one place, rather than alone and desolate if there aren't enough chatters in each country.

I uploaded the chat applet to http://www.box.net/public/gm17e3490n just unzip and upload the folder named irc to / and then anybody wanting to use the java applet can go to domain/irc/index.html
i have notes in the html for anybody other then the ipp to change the coding to fit their rooms on echel0n networks.

As Nicklas isn't around anymore, I had no clue this was hanging in the waits. Now - what's stopping your from simply creating a place and put up a link which can be presentet on the homepage? What's the aplet for? Where is it meant to be put`? Are you talking about some sort of function to be added to the site?

nbx909 has established the chat room already (I've been in it). It's channel #pp.int on server irc.echel0n.net. We just have to put up a note inviting everyone there.

If I understand correctly, the applet is a thing for people who don't have their own IRC client, so that they can enter the channel through their browsers. Assuming you'll host the applet here on pp-international.net, you just have to put its folder at / and then provide a link to its index page, which will be at http://ww.pp-international.net/irc/index.html.

What about XMPP services?

Postby John Nilsson » Sun Dec 10, 2006 10:07 pm

In addition to chat (IRC) there are som other applications we would need. Like IM, Collaboartive editing, VOIP and so forth,

XMPP seems interesting in this regard. Here is a little discussion about XMPP and Ubuntu collaboration.

I have suggested that obby should be used for online meetings. As I understand it obby and similar projects and other collaboration focused projects are moving to xmpp.

And if XMPP kan replace Skype, which seems to be rather popular among the Swedish pirates atleast, it's a huge win.

This seems to be sowmthing to investigate further.
