10 Years Since the Publication of the Panama Papers

The Slovenian Pirate Party released a statement on April 3rd, 2026, marking the 10th anniversary of the Panama Papers.

Today marks 10 years since the publication of the Panama Papers.

One of the most extensive journalistic investigations in history uncovered millions of documents from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. It revealed that numerous politicians, billionaires, and corporations around the world were hiding their assets in tax havens.

Hiding actual ownership through shell companies and channeling funds into tax havens does not serve only tax evasion, but also fraud. Transferring assets to such companies can lead to the defrauding of creditors.

Today, 10 years later, not much has changed. While the majority of people pay their taxes in full, those with the most influence still have the opportunity to game the system. In 2024, judges in Panama even acquitted all employees of Mossack Fonseca of the charges against them.

In the December episode of the Slovenian investigative show TarĨa (Target), in which the Pirates also participated, the Slovenian public was able to see how the Mayor of Ljubljana, his family, and his influential circle enjoy luxurious lives despite the multi-million debts created by their past business machinations.

All of this has been made possible precisely by the system that allows the transfer of assets abroad and the concealment of actual company ownership in Slovenia.

The Pirates will continue to consistently advocate for full transparency of company ownership and for restrictions on the transfer of assets to tax havens. It is time to hold the elite accountable and put an end to double standards.
