Why can’t our social media accounts be online forever? When we die our friends and family are still there. Licking the envelope closed is now mandatory! The old Dutch ‘briefgeheim’ (confidential letter) meant the postal service (and by analogy social media platforms) could not open and read letters. But there were conditions. Postal cards like those that you sent from your holiday location were plain, and openly readable. Those were exempt. That is the current situation for messages online now that the EU has again weakened the ePrivacy directive. China’s escalating crackdown on VPN use

For many years access to foreign media, social media platforms, and independent sources of information in China has been limited through extensive filtering and platform blocking. However, most Chinese could get around these restrictions by using VPNs without any serious consequences. Recent reporting suggests that law enforcement may now be clamping down on users who use a VPN. The next PPI General Assembly is approaching, and there are several organizational points that still need to be finalized. The GA has already been published, but without a confirmed time. We now need to agree on the schedule and make sure all parties and delegates receive the necessary information. General Assembly Will Take Place on June 20th

Pirate Parties International will hold a Special General Assembly (GA) on June 20, 2026. The meeting is being called following a special request from the Czech Pirates and other PPI members. The GA will take place online. At the PPI Board meeting on May 5, 2026, the Board agreed that it was necessary to call the GA without delay. The main reason is an urgent technical transition. PPI’s current technical services contract is ending on June 30, 2026, and the organization must decide how to ensure the continued operation of its communication, website, email, and related infrastructure. Age Verification Enforcement Concerns

Many pirates have been writing about the growing global movement to enforce age verification on social media and other online forums. We thus started asking our communities for feedback on this issue. This blog outlines the reasons for our concerns. We outline a number of studies and media that document the issue. The Slovenian Pirate Party released a statement on April 3rd, 2026, marking the 10th anniversary of the Panama Papers. Today marks 10 years since the publication of the Panama Papers. One of the most extensive journalistic investigations in history uncovered millions of documents from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. It revealed that numerous politicians, billionaires, and corporations around the world were hiding their assets in tax havens. Hiding actual ownership through shell companies and channeling funds into tax havens does not serve only tax evasion, but also fraud. Transferring assets to such companies can lead to the defrauding of creditors. Today, 10 years later, not much has changed. While …
