We recognize June 6th as Edward Snowden Day in commemoration of when the news he provided about the top-secret Prism was first revealed to the world. We hope this day will not focus on the negative aspects of surveilance states but will symbolize a day for digital human rights, privacy, and freedom. We are both celebrating Edward Snowden as a person as well as the meaning of what he revealed and helped us protect, our digital freedom. April 18 is the founding day of Pirate Parties International

The following statement was prepared by our General Secretary Alexander Isavnin in honor of our 16th birthday. The original version of the statement in Russian is pasted below. On April 18, 2010, a conference was held in Brussels where representatives of pirate parties from different countries agreed to create a shared international association. This was how Pirate Parties International, also known as the Pirate International, came into being. Today, April 16th, 2025, we are proudly celebrating 15 remarkable years since the founding of Pirate Parties International. On this very day in 2010 Pirates from around the world gathered in Brussels for a 3 day conference which established an international office for Pirate parties around the world. 15 Years of the Pirate Party of Switzerland Fifteen years ago (July 12th, 2009), the Swiss Pirate Party was formed. Initially there were 124 members who came together in Zurich to form the party. They shared a vision of promoting digital rights, transparency, and freedom in an increasingly surveilled world. Today they continue their efforts together with many other Pirate parties around the world. They have (co-)launched numerous initiatives, given a voice to critical issues and created grassroots level changes in Swiss society.
