Celebrating June 6th as Edward Snowden Day

We recognize June 6th as Edward Snowden Day in commemoration of when the news he provided about the top-secret Prism was first revealed to the world. We hope this day will not focus on the negative aspects of surveilance states but will symbolize a day for digital human rights, privacy, and freedom. We are both celebrating Edward Snowden as a person as well as the meaning of what he revealed and helped us protect, our digital freedom. We honor all of those, like Mr. Snowden, with the courage to speak the truth about a system that still exists today. Thirteen years ago the world learned that the surveillance state is …

Reviewing Our United Nations Activities

Perhaps the crowning achievement of PPI has been our participation in UN forums. We created a separate headquarters in Geneva in 2016, specifically with the goal of having a seat at UNOG. The following year in 2017 we were officially admitted into the Economic and Social Council Affairs Council. That same year we set up another center in New York hosted by local Pirates, which assists representatives attend events at UNHQ. In 2018 PPI achieved a milestone registering representatives simultaneously in all three UN centers. Most recently, since 2024, we now have an additional center in Vienna that can also assist Pirates who wish to attend events at UNOV. We …

Finally an easier way to hand over our data directly to Trump!

The White House has released its very own mobile app. Now, instead of your information being harvested indirectly through obscure third-party trackers, you can simply hand it over directly. Is this just an April Fool´s Day joke? Unfortunately, it is not! Read all about it: https://www.whitehouse.gov/releases/2026/03/new-white-house-app-delivers-unparalleled-access-to-the-trump-administration The app promises updates straight from Trump himself. For that extra dystopian touch, you can also use the app to submit tips to immigration authorities with their get in touch feature. It also requests extensive permissions, which ensures that you can and will be tracked as thanks for your participation. The US government is essentially trying to skip the social media middleman, so they …

The Case for a Digital Legacies Treaty

Pirate Parties International has increasingly advocated for digital rights in international forums. Our UNHQ representatives presented the importance of digital rights during their 2018 speech at the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and we also published the following statement that year for the Report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. We emphasize that digital rights are human rights, and global treaties must sanctify those rights and police nation states that both restrict access to digital services and violate privacy. Our digital footprints are more than merely data. They are a part of our person. When we die our digital footprint remains. We must protect our medical records, emails, …

Pirate Parties International Demands Immediate Restoration of Internet Access in Iran and International Solidarity with the Iranian People

Pirate Parties International condemns the nationwide internet shutdown that has been in effect in Iran since January 8, 2026. This measure is a flagrant violation of international human rights and serves to conceal crimes against humanity. Since December 28, 2025, hundreds of thousands of Iranians have been protesting against economic crisis and political oppression. The Iranian regime responds with mass violence and total digital blockade: Scores of protesters and civilians, including children, killed Civilians are arbitrarily arrested Media reporting and human rights documentation made impossible Security forces intensify oppression under cover of digital darkness The internet shutdown violates fundamental human rights: Right to freedom of expression (Article 19 ICCPR) Right …

Pirate Parties International on the Crisis in Venezuela

Pirate Parties International (PPI) strongly condemns the reported attack by the United States on Venezuela [1], which constitutes a grave violation of international law. The use of military force against a sovereign state is a clear breach of the UN Charter, specifically the prohibition of the use of force under Article 2(4). International conflicts must be resolved exclusively through diplomatic and legal channels. Reports regarding the abduction of Nicolás Maduro and his wife are deeply concerning. If the statements made by Donald Trump [2] [4] are confirmed, they represent serious human rights violations. Regardless of one’s political stance on the government in Caracas, such actions are a breach of international …

The Taming of Net Politics: HateAid as a Cautionary Tale for Digital Freedom

By Babak Tubis The U.S. sanctions on HateAid’s leaders in December 2025 have ignited a fierce transatlantic debate. One side frames it as an attack on European digital sovereignty and the fight against online hate, while the other celebrates it as a blow against “state‑sponsored censorship.” Both narratives, however, miss the deeper structural problem which has been emerging for years: HateAid has become a textbook example of the “gezähmte Netzpolitik” — the taming of internet politics — where independent, pluralistic activism is gradually replaced by conformist, institutionally dependent structures. This is evidenced by its state funding and privileged role as a Trusted Flagger under the Digital Services Act (DSA). Its …

PPI Statement on the Destruction of Democracy Under President Trump

Pirate Parties International stands in solidarity with the people of the United States and our colleagues from the US Pirate Party. We respect the resilience of the American citizens and non-American citizens who live in fear during these challenging times. Since Trump has returned to power, we observe with growing concern the negative impacts his administration has had on the sacred values of our movement: democracy, transparency, and human rights. We find it sadly ironic that the United States, a nation that was recognized for promoting freedom, the greatest democracy in the planet, now represents an authoritarian axis. PPI expresses deep concern not only for those in America, but also …
