April 18 is the founding day of Pirate Parties International

The following statement was prepared by our General Secretary Alexander Isavnin in honor of our 16th birthday. The original version of the statement in Russian is pasted below. On April 18, 2010, a conference was held in Brussels where representatives of pirate parties from different countries agreed to create a shared international association. This was how Pirate Parties International, also known as the Pirate International, came into being. 75 years – Universal Declaration of Human Rights – we declare:

75 years after the promulgation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [1], as a pirate movement, we renew our commitment to the defense and promotion of the rights established in the 1948 text and the treaties that have followed, which enshrine the ethical minimums we want for all people, communities and countries. We reinforce our work to overthrow all discrimination and subjugation of human beings by States, corporations and individuals. We call on the international community to continue working to co-construct a world that guarantees the dignity and freedom of individuals and communities, based on the collaboration of peoples in solidarity.
