9th Global Conference on Illegal Finance and Crypto

The following is a report from PPI´s representative at the United Nations Office of Vienna, Mr. Kay Schroeder, who attended the UNODC Conference on Illegal Finance and Crypto.   Reflections from the 9th Global Conference on Criminal Finance and Crypto – UN Vienna Yesterday I attended the 9th Global Conference on Criminal Finance and Crypto, hosted at the United Nations in Vienna with support from UNODC. While no official UN representatives were present, the event offered a revealing glimpse into how private sector challenges—particularly those surrounding crypto finance—are increasingly reframed as matters of public concern. The conference celebrated the growing institutional acceptance of crypto assets, shifting the narrative from speculative …

January 2026 PPI GA Location Discussion

We are debating where to hold our General Assembly (GA) in January 2026. The Board considered holding a physical event in Warsaw, Prague, and Potsdam/Berlin. We are open to any reasonable offers. The event will also be taking place online, and the physical event may be a small or large event. Technically more than one physical event is acceptable considering the global needs of our organization. Please let a PPI representative know by October 19th if your party would like to host the GA. We will announce the location(s) of the GA the following week.

Hack the Promise 2025 Conference Review

The HackThePromise Festival took place again from October 3–5, 2025 in the city of Basel, Switzerland. The theme this year was “Hacking Systems, Hacking Futures.” As usual, numerous Pirates were in attendance, including PPI´s alternate board member Schoresch Davoodi who spoke at the event and took pictures for us. https://hackthepromise.org/ The festival interprets “hacking” as not only about computers. It means breaking open systems, rethinking rules, and finding new ways to live and work together. HackThePromise mixes talks, art, films, workshops, technology, and social discussions. Over three days, participants questioned ask how technology can serve freedom and community instead of control. HackThePromise continues to grow as a meeting point for …

Czech Pirates Win 18 Seats in Parliament!

The Czech Pirate Party won 18 seats in the October 2025 election for Parliament! 🥳 Unfortunately, the main winner of the election was the populist billionaire and former prime minister Andrej Babiš and his ANO movement. He has expressed skepticism toward support for Ukraine and has drawn closer to authoritarian leaders such as Viktor Orbán in Hungary. The Czech Pirates run on a diametrically opposed platform. The overall result of 8.7% of the vote makes them the 3rd largest party in the country. While the success is not quite as monumental as when they won 22 seats in 2017. It does represent a vast improvement from just 4 seats that …

Congratulations to the New Board of the Pirate Party Germany!

The Pirate Party Germany held its General Assembly on September 27 and 28 in Dudweiler, Germany and elected their 19th Federal Board. Lilia Kayra Kuyumcu was elected as the new Chair. At just 18 years old, she is the youngest Chair in the history of the German Pirate Party. She will be joined by Denis Klüver as Vice-Chair, Jutta Dietrich as Treasurer, and Babak Tubis, Wolf Vincent Lübcke, Nick Neumann, and Karsten Wehner as Board Members. We welcome the new leadership and hope to hear from them on the international stage. We also extend thanks to the outgoing board members, who we also hope will work with us more on …

Stop Killing Games

Pirate Parties International supports the Stop Killing Games Initiative. Let people keep playing the games they bought! Provide gamers basic consumer rights. Give clear notice before shutting down a game. Offer refunds when access is removed. Provide offline play or patches when servers close. Be transparent about data use. Protect game history and preservation. Recent commentary by a Youtube games vlogger named “Pirate Software” misstates these aims. The Stop Killing Games Initiative was created to foster an open, inclusive, and democratic dialogue around the future of gaming culture, policy, and rights. Pirate Software’s portrayal distorts these core principles and risks undermining the credibility and positive aims of the initiative. These …

Reviewing the “Convention against Corruption” in Vienna

The following is a comment from PPI’s main representative at UNOV, Kay Schroeder, who recently tried to attend the United Nations “Convention against Corruption” (UNCAC) in Vienna. “This week, the “Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption” has begun in Vienna. Unfortunately, I cannot attend, as civil society is barred from participating. Nevertheless, I would like to share my thoughts on the topic of anti-corruption, the obvious impossibility of addressing this issue by the very suspects themselves, and the accompanying shadowboxing. UNCAC is the highest decision-making body of the United Nations in the fight against corruption. Its tasks include implementing adopted measures, coordinating new initiatives, …
