Let’s make it happen! More pirates in the EU Parliament! From the 23rd to the 26th of May, all EU-countries will be having elections again to vote for the European Parliament. The recent copyright directive that has passed is just another confirmation of what we already know: We need pirates in the European Parliament! PPI Official Statement: Supporting the Fight Against the EU Copyright Directive

For the last several weeks, activists all over the world have been mobilizing against the EU’s proposed Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market, and the threats it poses to internet freedom and civil liberties, specifically through Articles 11 and 13.    This mobilization is working under a couple of different names, including ‘Save Your Internet’ and ‘Stop ACTA2’. Organizers come from all walks of life and many of them are Pirates, in some cases representing and working through their national parties, in other cases working independently or with other digital and human rights groups. CEEP Signing in Luxembourg

On Saturday February 9 2019, Pirate representatives from over ten European countries met in Luxembourg to once again, after five years, sign the Common European Election Programme for the upcoming European Parliament election, which will take place this May. The Pirates are confident that we shall largely increase our representation from the current brilliant but only one MEP from Germany, Julia Reda. The most likely countries to send their Pirate representatives to the European Parliament after this election are Czech Republic, Luxembourg and Germany, while multiple other Pirate Parties across the Old Continent remain hopeful they might get in as well.   The PPI expresses its undying support in this …

The following is a call to action from Dutch Pirates Rico Brouwer and Saskia Söller. PPI’s function is to facilitate cooperation between Pirates all over the world. PPI visits the Pirates of Czech Republic!

The Pirates of the Czech Republic have become a shining success story of the global Pirate movement, becoming the third largest party in the national legislature with 22 Members of Parliament, as well as getting 262 local council representatives elected, and winning enough support to appoint the mayor of Prague (Zdeněk Hřib). Mr. Hřib is the first Pirate mayor of a capital city anywhere in the world. Pirates at the UN, Making Internet a Human Right

On July 16 and 17, Pirate Parties International (PPI) participated in events of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to promote the need for free universal internet access. The ideology behind this goal is to promote freedom of information and communication around the world, so no one is left behind. The High-level Political Forum, United Nations central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, provides for the full and effective participation of PPI as a consultative ECOSOC member. Pirates at the United Nations

On May 21st and 22nd, a group of five pirates from around the world visited the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the 6th Biennial High-level Meeting of the Development Cooperation Forum (DCF). This was the first meeting we attended as a designated consultative member of the ECOSOC committee. The event featured discussions from numerous prominent parliamentarians and NGO leaders. Representatives from the US Pirate Party and Pirate Party of Israel attended on behalf of Pirate Parties International Headquarters: Liz Gorski (USPP), Ohad Shem Tov (PPIL), Joe Klein (PPWI), Meg Cochran (USPP), and Keith Goldstein (PPI/PPIL).
