Reviewing PPI´s Participation at the Internet Governance Forum

The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) just ended, and PPI was lucky enough to host a workshop and have several representatives on site, together with our colleagues from PPEU. We have participated in this event for numerous years consecutively and view this forum as one of our main avenues to influence transnational governance on an issue that is very important to us, the Internet. This was the 20th IGF and held in Norway. The overarching theme was “Building Digital Governance Together”.       PPI’s Ethical Networking Workshop For the second year in a row we hosted a Day 0 workshop. This year´s workshop was titled “Ethical Networking: Sustainability and Accountability.” …

Escalating Conflict in the Middle East: A Call for Peace and Diplomacy

We at Pirate Parties International (PPI) observe the recent escalation between Israel and Iran with profound concern. Israel claims to have launched preemptive strikes targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities. However, the Netanyahu regime is already engaged in a devastating war in Gaza, and its military actions appear driven more by the political survival and legacy of his leadership. The international community deserves clear evidence and transparency regarding these attacks. On the other hand, the Iranian regime under Khamenei has also ruled atrociously. Iran continues to launch indiscriminate strikes on civilian centers, intentionally far from legitimate military targets. The Iranian regime’s persistent pursuit of nuclear weapons, support for terrorism targeting …

Reflections from the 34th Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Side Event at UNOV

Last month PPI’s United Nations Office at Vienna main representative Kay Schroeder attended a side event co-hosted by Interpol and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime during the 34th Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The event focused on the use of neurotechnologies in criminal justice. PPI is closely monitoring these conversations out of our concern that overzealous institutions will use these technologies to infringe on civil liberties. Neurotechnology includes everything from functional MRI scanners to brain stimulation devices. And the scary thing is that law enforcement have been adopting these technologies. While these capabilities promise new avenues for crime prevention, they also raise profound questions about …

Why is UNOV important for PPI?

Over almost a decade of UN activities, we have consistently attended events at the UN Headquarters in New York and the office in Geneva. Around 2019 we sent a few delegates to Vienna, but COVID ended most of our activities. This year we are making a new emphasis to network and lobby at UNOV, because a lot of very important global policies that are important to our movement are decided there. The important issues include crime, drugs, trade, outer space, and nukes. Over this past Easter holiday the chair of PPI, Keith Goldstein, met with the Pirate Party of Austria members, including the PPI main representative at UNOV, Kay Schroeder. …

PPI Statement on the Destruction of Democracy Under President Trump

Pirate Parties International stands in solidarity with the people of the United States and our colleagues from the US Pirate Party. We respect the resilience of the American citizens and non-American citizens who live in fear during these challenging times. Since Trump has returned to power, we observe with growing concern the negative impacts his administration has had on the sacred values of our movement: democracy, transparency, and human rights. We find it sadly ironic that the United States, a nation that was recognized for promoting freedom, the greatest democracy in the planet, now represents an authoritarian axis. PPI expresses deep concern not only for those in America, but also …

Pirate Party Netherlands Makes Statement on Israel and Palestine

The Pirate Party of the Netherlands released the following statement about the ongoing conflict in Israel and Palestine. We have translated that statement from Dutch for the international community. We also remind our members and our friends from other organizations to let us know if you have any important political statements that you would like us to broadcast. Israel & Palestine March 25, 2025 by Mark van Treuren Since the outbreak of the latest conflict between Israel and Hamas, we have been confronted with inhumane situations. The Pirate Party, like many others, stands as a powerless spectator to the atrocities occurring there. Violence is met with even greater violence. Recognizing …

The Pirate Party of Russia Endorses the United Nations Open Source Principles

The Pirate Party of Russia Endorses the United Nations Open Source Principles Recently, the Digital Technology Network (DTN) of the UN Board of Directors adopted 8 Open Source Principles. The Pirate Party of Russia, since its inception, has advocated for openness—including open source—and international integration. Therefore, we have decided to join this important initiative, which positively impacts the development of all humanity in a broad sense. In our decision-making, we adhere to the principles of direct electronic democracy and meta-politics. At our Congress—a body of direct governance consisting of all party members—81% voted in favor of joining this initiative. The UN Open Source Principles consist of eight guiding principles that …

Pirates at the Paris Defence and Strategy Forum

Our colleague from the Pirate Party of Germany in Munich, Alexander Kohler, recently attended the Paris Defence and Strategy Forum (PDSF). The event was held at the École Militaire in Paris from March 11 to 13. The 2025 forum was themed “Europe at the Crossroads”. The event focused on defense alliances, geopolitical challenges, and the evolving global landscape. Mr. Kohler is the leader of the Pirate Security Conference, which takes place in February each year. For over 10 years the PSC has provided a space to discuss how technological advancements redefine security. The event takes place alongside the Munich Security Conference, drawing in experts who participate in both events. The …

Pirates at the United Nations Office in Vienna, 2025!

We are pleased to present the following report from Kay Schroeder, PPI’s representative at the United Nations Office in Vienna. This year is the first time since before COVID that we were able to send representatives to all three UN offices (New York, Geneva, and Vienna). Please let us know if you would also like to visit the UN on behalf of PPI.   Report of Kay Schroeder on UNOV Meetings of the UNODC The UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) invited its member states to attend the 68th Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in Vienna, held from March 10th to 15th. This marked my first appearance as …
