PPI visits the Pirates of Czech Republic!

The Pirates of the Czech Republic have become a shining success story of the global Pirate movement, becoming the third largest party in the national legislature with 22 Members of Parliament, as well as getting 262 local council representatives elected, and winning enough support to appoint the mayor of Prague (Zdeněk Hřib). Mr. Hřib is the first Pirate mayor of a capital city anywhere in the world. This week PPI board members held personal talks with the Czech Pirate Party’s chairperson (MP Ivan Bartos), vice chairperson (MP Mikuláš Peksa), and others (Vice-speaker of Parliament MP Vojtěch Pikal and MP Jan Lipavský). Pirates at the UN, Making Internet a Human Right

On July 16 and 17, Pirate Parties International (PPI) participated in events of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to promote the need for free universal internet access. The ideology behind this goal is to promote freedom of information and communication around the world, so no one is left behind. The High-level Political Forum, United Nations central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, provides for the full and effective participation of PPI as a consultative ECOSOC member. Pirates at the United Nations

On May 21st and 22nd, a group of five pirates from around the world visited the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the 6th Biennial High-level Meeting of the Development Cooperation Forum (DCF). This was the first meeting we attended as a designated consultative member of the ECOSOC committee. The event featured discussions from numerous prominent parliamentarians and NGO leaders. Representatives from the US Pirate Party and Pirate Party of Israel attended on behalf of Pirate Parties International Headquarters: Liz Gorski (USPP), Ohad Shem Tov (PPIL), Joe Klein (PPWI), Meg Cochran (USPP), and Keith Goldstein (PPI/PPIL). PPI extends heartfelt congratulations to our friends at the Czech Pirate Party, who achieved a phenomenal result in the 2017 national Czech legislative elections. The Czech Pirate Party won 10.79% of the vote and is now the third largest party in the country! Pirates are a global movement, and the Czech Pirate Party has been a great contributor towards the movement. They hosted the 2012 Pirate Conference, one of the most successful Pirate conferences ever, and they are active participants in PPI GAs and events. Introducing PPI Zoom meetings – taking collaboration to a new level

Pirate Parties International’s mission statement points towards us attempting to help our members cooperate between countries and continents. We also focus strongly on transparency in our own operation. Therefore we have decided to test out a technical platform that brings us together despite the number of miles between us. We have chosen to start using Zoom.us video conference solution. Zoom has video, audio, blackboard, chat, screen sharing, polling and annotations. Furthermore it lets us record all of those interactions. When we choose, it is end to end encrypted. What sets Zoom apart is that we can talk with video with up to 100 participants.
