Social Media and UN Working Group Meeting Review

The SCENE (Standing Committee on External Networking Engagement) and SCUBA (Standing Committee on UN Bureaucratic Activities) working groups met on Feb. 11th. The following is a summary of that meeting. We started social media accounts with BlueSky- @ppinternational.bsky.social and Mastodon- https://mastodon.social/@ppinternational). With Twitter (now “X”) phasing out free TweetDeck access and introducing “Pro X,” we agreed that paying for such a tool just doesn’t mesh with our Pirate ethos. Instead, we’re researching open-source or cost-free alternatives to manage our accounts across X, Mastodon, Facebook, and Bluesky . PPI attends the UN Virtual Worlds Day

PPI attended the inaugural UN Virtual Worlds Day. A big thanks to our representative Carlos Polo and his colleagues at UNOG for attending the event on our behalf. The event was hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The event explored the transformative potential of the metaverse, from immersive VR experiences to discussions on spatial computing. They questioned how virtual technologies can foster international cooperation and sustainable development. Stay tuned for future events and ways to participate in PPI. PPI Attends The World Summit on the Information Society

PPI recently attended The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) +20 Forum High-Level Event 2024 from 27 to 31 May 2024. This is a UN summit held in Geneva. The current event marked the summit’s 20th anniversary. The WSIS aims to bridge the digital divide by increasing internet accessibility in developing countries. The event was co-organized by several United Nations organizations including ITU, UNESCO, UNDP, and UNCTAD. Numerous NGOs spoke, and PPI’s representatives were able to interact with these other NGOs, network, and share ideas. Our PPI UNOG main representative Carlos Polo attended the event on our behalf. Geneva Course to Stop Espionage and Surveillance

Pirate Parties International’s UNOG representative Carlos Parlo arrived yesterday for the opening event of the 55th Geneva Course conducted by Geneva for Human Rights – Global Training & Policy Studies. The course is taking place during the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council, from March 5 to March 22, 2024. As can be seen by the photos, the topics that they are promoting this year tie in clearly with Pirate policies to stop surveillance and espionage. Pirates at the UNHQ Partnership Forum in NY

On January 30, 2024 PPI’s representatives Ohad Shem Tov and Ohad Bar Siman Tov attended the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the Partnership Forum of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). 2024 UNOG Participation

We are thrilled to share that Pirate Parties International has once again secured ground passes, allowing our representatives to participate at the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland (UNOG). We also have a team on the ground at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and will be sharing a separate blog about their activities soon. Pirate Parties International expresses its strong condemnation of the ongoing conflict in Israel and Palestine. We are deeply saddened by the events in the region and extend our solidarity to the people of both nations who are suffering the consequences of this protracted conflict. Statement from Pirate Party of Israel on the Hamas Massacre of October 7th and the Gaza-Israel War

At sunrise on October 7th, thousands of participants at the peaceful NOVA music festival were brutally attacked and massacred by Hamas terrorists, resulting in over 260 butchered, and hundreds shot and injured. As an after-party, thousands of Hamas militants continued to carry out brutal massacres, torturing and mutilating bodies across civilian populations bordering the Gaza strip, killing men, women, children and pets indiscriminately. All this occurred amidst thousands of missiles being launched simultaneously towards urban communities across Israel. By sunset on October 7th there were over 1,400 killed and over 200 taken hostage, representing various nationalities worldwide.  The atrocities that occurred on October 7th haven’t been seen in this land …
