Report on the 69th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), Vienna

The 69th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) took place from March 9th to 13th at the United Nations offices in Vienna. The event was structured into plenary sessions, side events, and a number of mostly closed meetings. Representing Pirate Parties International, Lilia Kayra Kuyumcu and Kay Schroeder attended the session and followed the discussions closely. Overall, the atmosphere throughout the week was generally polite and friendly, and at times even a bit funny. The first three days were particularly crowded, with a noticeable drop in attendance toward the end of the session. This shift gave the later days a calmer and somewhat more relaxed tone. PPI at UNOG on the Global Inequality Emergency

PPI’s representative in Geneva, Carlos Polo, recently attended the high-level event hosted by the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) titled “Meeting the Inequality Emergency: Building a New Era of Understanding and Cooperation.” The event marked the launch of the first report on global inequality presented to the G20 by the Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality, chaired by Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz. The report highlights how extreme inequality is increasingly undermining democracy, economic stability, and social cohesion, especially in the wake of global crises such as COVID-19, the war in Ukraine, and ongoing trade tensions. At the last board meeting we made the decision to keep all PPI board meetings at 17:00 UTC on Tuesday. While the rotating system was designed to assist members from around the globe to participate, in practice it meant that those towards the East or West extremes of UTC were excluded from half the meetings. As such, we hope that everyone can attend more frequently. If needed, we will change the schedule again to accomodate those that need another time. The Case for a Digital Legacies Treaty

Pirate Parties International has increasingly advocated for digital rights in international forums. Our UNHQ representatives presented the importance of digital rights during their 2018 speech at the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and we also published the following statement that year for the Report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. We emphasize that digital rights are human rights, and global treaties must sanctify those rights and police nation states that both restrict access to digital services and violate privacy. Pirate Parties International continuously aims to protect basic human freedoms globally. Too often we gaze at the countries where Pirate parties exist, mostly in the developed world. However, we strongly believe that Pirates have a duty to examine problems around the world and attempt to garner international concern. Hopefully we can make a difference!
